What is the first step to establish a relationship with PrairieView Partners?
With what types of client do you work?
Our clients are very diverse, and have a broad range of employment backgrounds, ages, and investment objectives. Most of our clients are individuals and families, but we also work with trusts and company retirement plans. We can be particularly valuable to people going through a life transition, such as retirement, divorce, loss of a spouse, or sale of a business, because we are effective in translating new financial circumstances into sustainable, long-term financial plans and investment strategies. While many of our clients are retired or approaching retirement with a net worth from $1 million to $20 million, we are also committed to working with younger clients who may be in the earlier stages of building their investment portfolios. We approach every prospective client on a case-by-case basis to determine if the relationship will be mutually beneficial.
Why choose an independent advisor like PrairieView Partners instead of a large financial institution?
A key part of our mission is to give our clients highly personalized wealth management advice. Unlike large financial institutions, we provide customized planning and build unique portfolios. We believe that these services are not scalable in a corporate model, where efficiency concerns often lead to a “cookie-cutter” approach. To offer the level of service we think is necessary, we are committed to only working with a select number of clients. Our independence allows us the freedom to implement each person’s investment plan without regard to a particular product or investment vehicle.
What personal financial planning services do you provide and why are they important?
We frequently meet people who make financial decisions in a backwards fashion. They implement their investment portfolio before doing any real planning. Our process at PrairieView is to do the planning first and the investing second. For example, we won’t invest $1 of a client’s money until we thoroughly understand the specific cash flow needs, net worth, and multiple spectrums of risk tolerance.
We feel we can add tremendous value to the financial planning of most individual, family and small businesses. Situations that present complexities are where we truly thrive. We are experts in managing the income tax implications that are often a part of major life transitions. Essentially we encourage our clients to contact us anytime they are faced with an important financial decision.
Major Planning Areas:
- Retirement & Cash Flow projections to determine if you are on track to meet your goals
- College savings strategies
- Employee compensation and Stock Option analysis as well as evaluation of concentrated positions
- Identifying and designing optimal retirement plans to fit with both company-employed and self-employed individuals
- Consulting on debt management choices including home mortgage, refinancing and home equity loans/lines of credit.
- Tax return preparation and income tax planning (facilitated through our affiliated CPA firm).
- Estate tax planning and estate plan design (our team includes a licensed attorney who focuses on estate plan design and implementation). We work with clients every step of the way.
- Life Insurance –we will review any life insurance holdings for their efficiency relative to your financial plan as well as cost-effectiveness.
What is your investment approach?
We build global portfolios designed to diversify a client's assets broadly across major investment markets worldwide. We look for attractive investment returns wherever they can be found, provided that we can invest in those markets at low cost and with controlled risk. We fundamentally believe that long-term investment performance is determined primarily by the investment markets in which one participates, and to a lesser extent by the specific investment security itself. We combine these market investments in a way to reduce risk while not sacrificing the returns. To stabilize portfolios, we employ a conservative fixed income strategy utilizing bonds and cash, avoiding long-term maturities, and including only investments of very high credit quality. We primarily use "asset class" and institutional investment vehicles to represent these markets. We design a customized portfolio for each client based on his or her specific investment objectives. Each portfolio is therefore uniquely tailored the individual’s particular circumstances.
What do you mean when you say you are a “fee-only” advisor?
The “traditional” financial services model was built around commission-based compensation, which means if the advisor doesn’t sell you something, he or she doesn’t get paid. We feel this model is fraught with the potential for conflict of interest since an advisor will naturally have an incentive to recommend high commission products that may not be well-suited for the client. There is also a built-in incentive to change or replace investments to produce more revenue for the advisor, and clients are seldom fully informed of the actual costs of the resulting sales. At PrairieView Partners, your fees are based solely on the liquid assets that we manage for you. We collect no commissions from the sale of investments or life insurance. All of the financial planning services we provide are included in the overall management fee, with the only exception being fees for tax return preparation through our affiliated CPA firm.
How does being a wealth manager differentiate PrairieView Partners?
True wealth management, as we define it, is frequently offered but rarely executed in a meaningful way. As wealth managers we take a holistic approach to developing your financial plan. Many in our industry will make the same claim, but are they actually equipped to deliver on this promise? Every client of PrairieView is connected to a team of partners. At each review meeting you are seated with your investment manager, your CPA, a tax and estate attorney, and a Certified Financial Planner. These functions are not outsourced to third parties and our clients are not “assigned” to less-experienced para-planners. Because we know our clients so well, we are in an excellent position to integrate every aspect of their planning needs.
How are your fees calculated and when do you get paid?
We charge a fee based on a percentage of the value of the assets we manage. The fee is quoted as an annual percentage fee, and is billed quarterly by taking the value of managed assets at the end of each calendar quarter and applying one-fourth of that annual percentage fee. The fee is normally deducted directly from the client’s account or accounts on the first day of each quarter.
As a client of PrairieView Partners, would I be able to view my accounts on-line?
Yes. Our custodian partner, Charles Schwab, provides a secure and easy-to-navigate web site that allows you to continually monitor your investments and transactions.
How often do you meet with your clients?
Review meetings are based on a client’s needs and are mapped out over a two year period in quarterly or semiannual intervals. Meetings include two or three members of PrairieView’s experienced team of professionals, including a certified financial planner, an investment specialist, a certified public accountant, and an estate planning attorney. Each member of this advisory team knows the people they work with personally and professionally and we all work together to make sure that every client’s financial, investment, tax, and estate planning needs are continually addressed and each component of the plan is coordinated across disciplines.
What can I expect in the way of reports regarding my portfolio?
Each client receives a quarterly investment performance report from PrairieView Partners. These quarterly reports outline returns, cash flow activity and advisory fees in a clear and concise manner. You will always know how your portfolio has performed since you started working with us and over a variety of time periods. We also compare your returns with established benchmark indexes. In addition to the quarterly statements, you will get a monthly statement directly from the custodian of your accounts, usually Charles Schwab and/or TIAA-CREF. Finally, we will also provide you with periodic newsletters on a variety of topics we feel are relevant to your financial life. We are happy to provide all reports and statements in an electronic format, if preferred.
Must I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul to work with you?
There are no restrictions as to where a client resides – we have clients throughout Minnesota and in many other states across the country.
Is there an option to include socially responsible investment objectives within my portfolio?
We respect our clients' values. Our approach is to build a portfolio to match a client's personal values while delivering the diversification, risk reduction, and low fees of indexing. Clients get the best of both worlds: A portfolio that reflects what they believe in—and tracks the benchmark.
Can you provide advice on how I should invest the money in my company's 401(k) Plan?
Yes. If you are actively participating in your company's 401(k) plan, we will provide guidance on how to choose among the investment options offered. Many of our clients have asked us to include 401(k) and 403(b) plans in their reporting and overall portfolio management, which we are happy to do this. In these instances, we will manage these retirement plans for you.
